Aunty Nancy is a respected Torres Strait Islander Elder and the Founder, Managing and Creative Director of Bamaga Productions, a full-service Indigenous-owned and operated content creator, strategy, and events consultancy, and has been Camerata’s Elder-in-Residence since 2021.
Aunty Nancy is a Curtin University graduate with links to the Thabu/Samu Clan from Saibai Island in the Torres Strait and is regarded as one of Australia’s leading Community Management and Cultural Development Practitioners.
Over three decades, including 10 years as manager of Queensland Aboriginal Creations, Aunty Nancy has helped hundreds of Indigenous performers and visual artists launch careers and build businesses. Her support of Indigenous arts and human rights has been recognised with many awards, which include an International Women’s Day Citation in 2011 and an Australian of the Year nomination in 2013.
Aunty Nancy has also created dozens of events and festivals and produced many opening ceremonies. Her highlights include partnering with Bangarra Dance Theatre to deliver the Welcome to Country at the G20 Summit; working as First Nations Producer for the Australian Performing Arts Market; organising the Brisbane City Council’s annual Black History Month; and programming the Clancestry Festival at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre and the Indigenous dance program, The Gathering, in the Queen Street Mall.
As a consultant, Aunty Nancy has helped numerous Australian businesses develop culturally capable workplaces. Aunty Nancy was a non-executive board member for 6 years at Tourism and Events Queensland, and is embarking on a new journey this August. Keep an eye out!
Camerata met Aunty Nancy at Merivale Street Studios when QPAC invited Camerata to become Company-in-Residence and in 2021, after a long friendship, Aunty Nancy became Camerata’s Elder-in-Residence. She continues to provide her wealth of knowledge and expertise to support our work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
