Upbeat is Camerata’s emerging artist initiative, fostering the next generation of Queensland musicians, and provides a number of performance and rehearsal opportunities over twelve months to support career pathways for talented graduating or recently graduated artists.
The participants join Camerata to experience life as an Artistic Associate of Camerata, gain valuable industry insight, and be mentored by Camerata’s Artistic Associates.
Camerata is pleased to announce the following members of this year’s 2023 Upbeat program:
- Emilia Jarvela, Violin
- Chaeeun Oh, Violin
- Helena Burns, Viola
- Mya Whatson, Cello
- Charlotte Scanlan, Double Bass
The program is close to the heart of Camerata’s Artistic Director, Brendan Joyce, who spoke fondly of those emerging years as a professional musician.
“In Camerata’s earliest existence, we were all ‘emerging’ or would be ‘upbeat program’ players in some ways, and those experiences were so formative, and they are beautiful memories that I will carry with me forever, so I would hope we can replicate at least some of the flavour of that for these emerging players.
“The standard of the Upbeat Program auditions for 2023 was extremely high and there were more applicants than we’ve ever received.
“It was also great to see one player who was unsuccessful last year, try again this year and to hear huge leaps forward in her playing.
“Queensland has traditionally been a hub for string playing, and Camerata has been a central part of that, so if we can continue to be part of that flourishing of the art of string playing here then I feel heartened.”
Charlotte Burns, Upbeat Double Bassist, spoke of her excitement to join the program and being a part of an ensemble that is completely self-reliant and unconducted.
“It’s something I am most excited to experience with Camerata. I feel that without a conductor…the ability to communicate with all members of the ensemble becomes crucial. I am excited for this learning curve and I am eager to be a part of the it.”
Camerata’s 2023 Upbeats are excited to make meaningful connections, develop their playing, get real world experience and spread the joy of music with Camerata this year.
We are excited to welcome them to Camerata!
