Camerata joins the Rockhampton Museum of Art as Artist-in-Residence!

During the residency from October to December 2024, through musical play and composition, five musicians, along with Camerata’s 2024 Emerging Composer-in-Residence Alexandra Mison, will respond to works from Collection Focus: Women and the National Gallery of Australia’s touring exhibition, Know My Name: Australian Women Artists.

Each artist will select a specific artwork that inspires them and respond to the artwork through music. The artistic process will be on full display, as the artists will work on the pieces in the gallery, culminating in a free, roving musical experience throughout the exhibition on Saturday, 7 December 2024.

Visitors will witness unique, immersive musical experiences where musician and composer collaborate to create new music that explores the core theme of the exhibitions.

“Camerata is super excited about this residency. Though we have undertaken projects like this before, it’s the first time we are doing this in Rockhampton – a city that holds a special place in our hearts as the first centre we visited on our first annual regional Queensland tour way back in 2009.

“Now the city boasts one of the most stunning galleries in the nation, a truly splendid piece of architecture and I tell people visiting the area that it should be number one on their tourism list.

“We’ll be responding to the artworks in Know My Name and Collection Focus: Women – two stunning and compelling collections that we’ve all been inspired by for the artistry and poignancy.

“It’s a real challenge actually, and this sort of work makes us vulnerable in a way, but I’m grateful for the challenge. Though these pieces of art can stand on their own merits, music can provide another doorway into their secrets and stories. This is some of our most important work and I’m thrilled we can do this in Rockhampton.” Brendan Joyce, Camerata Artistic Director & leader
