Spirit of the Banana Shire, live from Theodore, composed by Camerata’s Emerging Composer-in-Residence Alexandra Mison is now available for streaming!
“Spirit of the Banana Shire [is] a wonderful piece of music and I love to think that it was inspired by a visit to Theodore and Biloela!” Meredith Barrett, audience member.
This year’s tour commission, Spirit of the Banana Shire, written by Camerata’s 2024 Emerging Composer-in-Residence, Alexandra Mison, has just been released across all streaming platforms, in a live recording from Theodore, Queensland!
Premiered on our regional tour in May/June, Spirit of the Banana Shire was inspired by the Theodore and Biloela areas during Alexandra’s travels earlier this year, both of which celebrated their centenary this year. The title of the piece is drawn from the Spirit of the Land Mural in Biloela, which outlines the history of the land and its people through the lens of local historical women.
About Alex’s composition
“The sound of [Spirit of the Banana Shire] resonates the feeling of coming to the country. The longing for quiet and tranquillity is the epitome of this piece. Stunningly beautiful.” Billie-Jean Jacobs, audience member.
The first movement, Ruby, was inspired by Ruby Campbell (b. 1888), a local artist who managed the Kilburnie Homestead, located twenty minutes from Biloela. A tender melodic line interspersed with moments of intensity reflects her strength and determination, traits which are woven into the fabric of this community.
The second movement, Mulberry Tree Island, depicts the adventures had by generations of Theodore residents along the Dawson River. Triplets drive the movement forward as a cheerful, upbeat melody is passed between the players, reflecting the sense of youthfulness and joy that is palpable when you visit this place.
“I loved Spirit of the Banana Shire! Great to hear a totally new piece of music which was thoroughly wonderful!” Kathy Devries, audience member.
