“Performing with Camerata has inspired me to explore the world of chamber music more. There is something so compelling about seeing a tight-knit group of musicians who share a love of the music they are playing. My overarching goal for the next few years is to perform with the same enthusiasm and energy that Camerata members exude.”
- Tell us about your career since you completed Camerata’s 2020/21 Upbeat Program. Are there any performances or projects you worked on or will work on that you are especially proud of?
Since being an Upbeat Artist in 2020/21, I’ve enjoyed a variety of musical experiences, ranging from chamber and orchestral concerts to playing in musicals and recording sessions. Two performance highlights would be performing the Lark Ascending at the Brisbane Music Festival and playing as concertmaster for Lynch and Paterson’s production of Phantom of the Opera. I have also enjoyed curating concerts for The Halls Music quartet, featuring my three brothers! Last year we collaborated with Fusion choir to deliver a concert at Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens. Recently we’ve been working towards a cinematic concert in September and an orchestral Christmas production.
2. You joined Camerata on several projects in 2023 as an Upbeat. How did the program help develop your skills and career, and what are the key learnings you took from it?
Participating in Camerata’s Upbeat Artist program in 2023 allowed me to develop my skills as an orchestral musician in an energetic, supportive and kind environment. Key learnings that I took from the program include how to prepare an orchestral part in my personal practice, orchestral etiquette, and how achieve work/life balance while working in a professional orchestra. Most of all, performing with Camerata as an Upbeat Artist taught me how enjoyable working in a chamber orchestra can be and it has set my standards for future professional work as an orchestral musician!
3. What are your dreams and aspirations as a professional musician, and where do you see yourself in the next 5 to 10 years?
I’ve always loved orchestral playing, but performing with Camerata has inspired me to explore the world of chamber music more. There is something so compelling about seeing a tight-knit group of musicians who share a love of the music they are playing. My overarching goal for the next few years is to perform with the same enthusiasm and energy that Camerata members exude.
I’m also passionate about making music accessible and interesting for the younger generations, and would love to see chamber music play more of a role in that. Over the next few years, I’d like to establish a chamber concert series in North Brisbane, involving an immersive chamber music experience for string students.
4. Any advice or hot tips for future Camerata Upbeat Artists, or aspiring musicians?
Each musician has a unique perspective, and that includes you! Be confident in your own playing style and interpretation, but also come prepared to be flexible and try new musical ideas. Prepare your part as much as possible so that you can enjoy the rehearsals and focus on collaborating as opposed to stressing about getting the correct notes! In those particularly hectic seasons of rehearsals/performances/auditions, remember why you chose to play.
