“I am greatly looking forward to working with and learning from professional musicians, and playing in an orchestra without a conductor. [Joining Camerata as an Upbeat] is a great opportunity for my growth as a musician and person. It will greatly develop my chamber music skills such as listening and blending. It will also strengthen my communication skills and willingness for experimentation, which are integral to being in a chamber group.”
Meet Kevin Hsu, one of our 2024 Upbeat artists!
Kevin grew up in Taiwan and immigrated to Australia at the age of 12. He picked up his sister’s violin at the age of 11 when she left her violin to play the piano, and then discovered his love for music making. He says, “I love the comradery and joy of sharing a common vision with like-minded and talented musicians… and being able to express emotions and imaginations through the medium of music.”
Kevin had heard of the Upbeat program through several of his friends, who have been part of the program in the past. He is very much looking forward to experiencing playing without a conductor and improving his chamber music skills.
He is really excited to grow as a musician and person, and to working on his chamber music skills such as listening, blending, strengthening his communication skills and experimenting as a group.
Fun fact! One of Kevin’s favourite pieces are Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time and Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence.
Our Upbeat program is designed to foster emerging artists through mentoring from our Artistic Associates, and rehearsals and performance opportunities to gain valuable industry insight and experience.
We are delighted to welcome Kevin as part of Camerata’s Upbeat program. He will be joining us for Queensland Ballet’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream season, this April.
