“Matthew Hindson, the composer, based his music firmly in melodic forms from the past to suit the historical nature of the story and borrowed from various genres including baroque overtures, string quartets and even a bush dance. As always conductor Nigel Gaynor and the brilliance of Camerata – Queensland’s Chamber Orchestra completed the deal. In my opinion, the music, though a perfect accompaniment to the many moods of this ballet, could stand on its own as an important and joyous new orchestral work.” John Andrew, Weekend Notes.
From 16 June to 25 June 2023, Camerata joined Queensland Ballet’s season Trilogy as their Live Music Partner.
Trilogy was Queensland Ballet’s 2023 triple bill featuring three stand-alone short works by world renowned choreographers Cathy Marston, Jack Lister, and Christopher Bruce, where Australian spirit and passion swirled into a Scandi noir cinematic experience followed by the toe-tapping energy of the ’60s.
Camerata performed A Brief Nostalgia by Tom Harrold, an award-winning Scottish composer whose music has received worldwide performances by a multitude of performing groups and artists, as well as world premiere work My Brilliant Career by Matthew Hindson, one of Australia’s most dynamic and successful composers, who composed this piece especially for Queensland Ballet’s production.
“The finale for the night is choreographer Cathy Marston’s take on My Brilliant Career by Miles Franklin. This is a world premiere so something special and the music by Matthew Hindson played so beautifully by Camerata, is stunning.” Phil Brown, InQueensland.
